Three Health Benefits of Massages + Lorain County Massage Deal!

January 9, 2016 by racheljk Leave a Comment

Disclosure: I was offered a free massage. No blog post was required. I am not affiliated with Lisa in anyway. All opinions are my own. 3 health benefits of massages

**Want more deals?  Find me on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter!**

Thanks goodness the holidays are over! I’m back on track eating right, I’ve been to the gym everyday and I already got my first massage of the year! Did you know that getting a massage can be healthy for you? Check out what my massage therapist, Lisa says below.

If you are interested in getting a massage, Lisa is offering up a promo for January called “Target 2” where she’ll target two areas of concern for $20!  Each area will have 10 minutes of “spot treatment” for when you are on-the-go.  Please call for details or check out her facebook page.

If you are working on that New Year’s resolution to exercise, massage is the PERFECT compliment to your wellness goals! Not only will massage give us better sleep quality, reduce our stress levels, and increases our immunity, but it can also make exercise, work, following a nutrition plan, and life in general easier to manage on a daily basis. If you are new to massage or just looking to improve your wellness, here are a few reasons to make routine, monthly visits with your massage therapist:

1.) SAY GOOD-BYE TO WASTE BY-PRODUCTS (aka toxins)
When we exercise, we are using energy that is stored in our muscles. Sometimes our muscles aren’t used to being worked like they are when we exercise so they have to work harder. Energy also creates waste products (think of that sweat we create when we are cursing the treadmill). Getting regular massages helps to eliminate the excess metabolic waste that we create, improve our cell nutrition, and increase our oxygen supply to our muscles. This means massage can make our workouts more efficient.

massage lisa

2.)IMPROVE CIRCULATION LEVELS
Massage improves circulation, improves vascular response, and reduces inflammation of skeletal muscle whether we exercise or not. BUT, when we do exercise, think of how much easier our workouts become? What does this translate to? A reduced recovery time with less soreness after our workouts. Not only can we “up our game,” but we can aid in better quality training sessions. Massage=potentially better workout results.

3.) IMPROVE FLEXIBILITY
Yep, massage helps with this, too. Sometimes when we exercise a lot, our muscles actually lose the ability to relax, which is why we might have tight muscles and a lack of flexibility. This can cause that nagging soreness we feel from a workout. Massage will loosen tight muscles, improve range of motion, and strengthen our tonal quality for improved performance.

Massage can be more than aromatherapy and zen. Adding massage as a part of your wellness goals can give optimal results when combined with an exercise regimen. As with anything, if you are uncertain about a specific health concern, consult with your primary care physician first.

lisa mikulan massage lorain

Want to book your own massage? Lisa offers sessions in her Lorain, Ohio home by appointment only. Message her on her Facebook page to schedule an appointment. Keep in mind that you are welcome to leave a tip as Lisa does accept gratuity.

Here are a few things to keep in mind. Lisa offers 1 hour full body relaxation massages (no prenatal, deep tissue, hot stone, geriatric, oncology, etc.). Before your first inital appointment, Lisa will go over your health history and assess if her services are permissible with any current health conditions.  Lisa shared that she has been licensed by the state of Ohio’s Medical Board since 2007. She has undergone an extensive background check and is properly trained.  Lastly, Lisa does have cats but they do not enter this room. Only if you have an extreme allergy should this be a problem.

Today ONLY, you can grab the Fitbit One Wireless Activity Plus Sleep Tracker for only $74.99. This is regularly priced at $99 so it’s a great price!
As some of you know I’ve been on a weight loss journey and have lost 100lbs!! Crazy, I know! If you haven’t read my latest blog post on my weight loss you can hop over and read it.  I know, I totally need to update you all better on my progress as my last post was in September!

UPDATE:  Join my Getting Healthy With Rachel group on Facebook, where I share recipes and what I’m doing to lose weight!

What is a Fitbit?

Fitness means being active, sleeping well and eating smarter — and Fitbit One helps you do all three. During the day, it tracks your steps, distance, calories burned and stairs climbed. Come nightfall, it measures your sleep cycle to help you see how to sleep better and it can even wake you in the morning without waking your partner. Your stats upload wirelessly via computer or select mobile devices (like the iPhone 4S). Powered by your stats, you can set goals, and track progress with charts and graphs.

Why I wear a Fitbit:

My trainer Suzy from Your Best Fitness Friend (yes, she’s totally awesome) suggested this little gem back when I started working with her in February of last year.  I always knew that I should keep track of my food intake and even my workouts but I never thought about keeping track of my steps (10,000 minimum is recommended every day), floors climbed, calories burned, or even my sleep.  This little tracker does it all and best of all it does it wirelessly!  That means whenever I walk by my computer it uploads it for me straight to the website.  No more pen and pencil or slips of paper to keep track of!

Why you should wear a Fitbit:

If you need a little kick in your butt motivation wise, the Fitbit is perfect! No, it won’t go to the gym for you but it will help remind you that it’s time to get up and get moving when you see your progress through out the day!  The Fitbit will not only help you get motivated but also stay motivated by allowing you to earn badges or connect with friends for support or friendly competitions.  You can even log food, workouts and more online.

The whole family of Fitbit products are HIGHLY rated so I know you won’t be disappointed!

My Weight Loss Jouney: 5 Tips For Finding the Best Running Shoes

This is not a sponsored post. A huge thanks to Fleet Feet Sports for giving me a discount on my first pair of running shoes. All opinions are my own.
5 tips for finding the best running shoes

**Like it? PIN IT**

I’ve started doing something I never thought I would! I’ve recently started running. The crazy thing is there isn’t anyone chasing me, nor am I running away from anything. I’m running for my health! Last year I started to share a little about my weight loss journey here on my blog and while I’ve had ups and downs I feel stonger than I have ever been.

My trainer, Suzy from Your Best Fitness Friend has been after me for over a year to get a good pair of shoes for the gym. I kept putting it off but recently decided it was time to step it up and find a pair that could support me and my goals. I really had no idea where to turn until my friend, Holly suggest Fleet Feet Sports in Westlake, Ohio (they also have stores in Northfield and Pepper Pike).

fleet feet sports westlake ohio

I’m by no means an expert in running in fact I’m quite a novice but after stopping in at Fleet Feet Sports in Westlake, Ohio, I can say that I learned quite a lot.  If you are just starting out or even just thinking about running, here are 5 tips for finding the best running shoes.

#1: Go to a specialty store:  For years, I’ve been wearing shoes that I’ve purchased at a local discount store. No one helped me pick out the right type of shoe, in fact I even guessed my size even though I hadn’t been measured in years. Even a newbie like me knew that this was not the type of store to buy shoes in but it was where I felt most comfortable. Man, am I glad I went out of my comfort zone.

As soon as I walked into Fleet Feet Sports, I was greeted with a smile and asked what I could be helped with. All of my fears of not being “fit enough” for this type of store went right out the window. There was no judgement at all. In fact, Jody, who helped me out that day, felt more like an teacher than a sales person. Before fitting me for shoes, he watched me walk, measured my arch and asked a lot of questions. There was none of that at any other store I had visited in the past.

#2: Ignore fashion:
I know it’s a little strange coming from someone who doesn’t leave the house without lip gloss and a pair or cute earrings but when talking about the health of your feet, fit comes first. At Fleet Feet Sports, I was reminded several times to consider the feel of the shoe and how it felt while walking. This little reminder helped tremendously when choosing the shoes that were best. Comfort factor aside though, I was given so many choices of shoes that try on and each one where either a nice color or had a fun design. What more could you ask? Cute and fuctional.

#3: Try before you buy:
I tried out a lot of different shoes before deciding which ones to buy. Each time I put on a new pair, Jody, suggested that I walk and even run around the store. While it seemed silly at first I’m glad I did what was suggested. In fact, not only did I run around the store but I also did it with two different pairs of shoes. This gave me a much clearly picture of which shoe fit best.

fleet feet sports cleveland ohio

#4: Wear the right gear:
Before picking your shoe, be sure to have ask if your foot type is in need of inserts. Inserts can help create balance from the ground up which takes off pressure from the knees, ankles, hips and joints. Not everyone may need this but the guys at Fleet Fleet can let you know. Also before you leave, be sure to check out the other running gear that they have. I was in desperate need of new socks (really ANY socks) since I always wore my hubby’s which were way to big for me. Starting with a more supportive sock and insert can really make a huge difference in your running or walking stride.

#5: Be willing to invest: You know that I’m as frugal as they come, but I also feel that some things really are worth investing in.  My health is one of them which includes a quality pair of workout shoes. I’ve been buying cheap shoes for years but I can tell you this, I’m never going the cheap route again for running shoes. I have realized that comfort and fit are worth spending a little more on. Plan on spending around $100 on a good quality pair of shoes. I promise your feet, knees, and back will thank you.

In the end, no matter where you are on your ouw healthy journey, I want to encourage you that you can do this! At my heaviest, I was worn out, discouraged and felt completely hopeless. Once I made the decision to make changes (very small changes at first), I immediately saw the difference it made for not only my weight but also my health. If you are struggling, be sure to join my new Facebook group, called, Getting Healthy with Rachel. I share tips, food choices and what I’m doing to get active. I’d love the chance for us to encourage each other!

My Weight Loss Journey: Throwback Thursday

September 18, 2014 by racheljk 8 Comments

me April 2013 a
See that girl up there? Yep, that was me, just last year.

This picture was taken the day my mom and I joined Weight Watchers (read last week’s post).  I was at my heaviest and to say that my weight was out of control would be an extreme understatement.  As soon as we came home from our first meeting I asked my mom to take a picture of me.  I knew that in the future I would want to look at this picture to remember where I had been.

When at my heaviest I never allowed full length pictures to be taken of me; I never wanted to admit that I was as big as the pictures showed. When you are that overweight your mind plays tricks on you.  I’d see a picture of myself and I would pretend it was just a bad angle or that I was having a bad picture day.  I would actually delete any picture that made me look….well life-like.

With each season’s  change,  instead of trying on last years clothes, I would just buy new ones.  I allowed myself to get bigger and bigger while making excuses for it or pretending it wasn’t happening.  Along with my denial, I feel that my outgoing personality held me back.  Instead making changes to my lifestyle, I would make light of it or even joke about it.  While my high self esteem never wavered at this weight, it definitely made me more comfortable than I should have been which allowed my weight to continue to climb.

weight loss journey
When I finally took the first step of getting healthy I had to take a long hard look at myself.  What was I doing to be this weight?  What obstacles were in my way that needed to be removed? What were my excuses that were keeping me overweight? Only after being honest with myself could I truly make the needed changes.

Two BIG changes needed to happen in order for me to lose weight; I had to eat less and exercise more.  Not one or the other or just a little of both but instead a full fledged decision to make healthier choices throughout the day.  Instead of sitting on the couch I got up and moved.  Instead of eating the plate of spaghetti, I chose to instead eat a lean protein with lots of veggies.  Each healthy choice that I made made me stronger both inside and out.

Today, I’m down 95 pounds and still going strong.  I have much more to lose but I’m excited to see what more my body can do.  I hope you stick around and continue with me on my weight loss journey and perhaps start your own.  I’d love to continue to lose with you and hear your own story.

Feel free to leave a comment below!

My Weight Loss Journey: How It All Started

September 5, 2014 by racheljk 2 Comments

weight loss
If you’ve been following my blog for awhile you’ve probably seen how I’ve struggled with my weight.  I was average weight in high school and college but soon after I got married my weight started creeping up.  Late night meals, eating junk, and finding out way too late that I couldn’t eat what my husband did definitely helped me pack on the pounds.  By the time we started having kids, 8 years into our marriage I was overweight, no I was obese.

I have tried over the years to lose weight but after about 20 pounds I would just stop and gain it all back.  It was a battle that I thought I would never win.  I felt defeated, scared and and completely unequipped to get healthy….until last spring.  I’m not sure what it was but something clicked for me and I had had enough.  My mom and I joined Weight Watcher’s in April of 2013 (read my announcement on my Couponing with Rachel Facebook page) and right away I felt like this time it was different.

weight loss weight watchers
My mom and I had been previous members but our encouraging and highly spirited leader, Lynn was new to me.  I loved that I she gave out her Facebook information to help you stay on track during the week and gave you support however you needed it.  We stayed after our first meeting and I remember telling Lynn that I wanted to be a success story.  I WAS going to be a success story!  I was bound and determined to get the weight off and didn’t want to give up.  For me, to be bound and determined to lose weight wasn’t a body thing, it was a head thing.  I knew my body could do anything, it was my brain I had to convince.

In November of  last year I reached my 50 lb mark at Weight Watcher and was elated! I received my 50 lb charm and shared a little about my journey with my Weight Watchers group.  It was the first time that I had lost a significant amount of weight and it felt so good!  Eating right and exercise TOGETHER made a huge difference on my weight loss.

Me and my trainer, Suzy!

After the Christmas holidays I felt like I was starting to slip and wanted to be sure I was staying on track so I hired Suzy a personal trainer from My Best Fitness Friend.  Since then I have made some drastic changes and have seen the weight just fall off.  Now before getting too excited, it doesn’t actually FALL OFF just by itself.  It’s a lot of hard work and dedication.  Saying yes to healthy choices AND making time for myself to go to the gym has made a huge difference!

Each week I’ll be sharing a tip or giving you a peek at my weight loss.  It’s going to be a struggle for me since I find that this topic is hard for me to share about but I hope that it will inspire you to making your healthy choices.  If I can do this ANYONE can!

Note: Next week I’ll be showing my BEFORE picture (see that post HERE)…you won’t want to miss it!!  I actually GASPED when I saw it recently!

Thomas Hall for the @broadwayakron series and I’m still smiling! Last night at @playhousequare, I experienced somet Last night at @playhousequare, I experienced something unforgettable. ✨ Seeing @suffsmusical live was deeply moving, soul-stirring, and powerful in a way that stays with you long after the curtain falls. I cried several times. Not quiet tears, but the kind that come from feeling seen, shaken, and inspired all at once. This Tony-winning musical tells the true story of the women’s suffrage movement in the United States, over a century old, yet aching with relevance today. It captures the courage, the conflict, and the cost of fighting for a voice. These women marched on Washington, protested outside the White House, endured hunger strikes, and risked everything for a future they might never personally benefit from. And watching it unfold through a brilliant, all-female cast makes the story hit even harder - raw, urgent, and electric. What struck me most is how alive this story feels. This isn’t history trapped in the past—it’s a reminder that progress is loud, uncomfortable, and often born from persistence when hope feels thin. Suffs doesn’t whisper its message; it sings it boldly: change only happens because people refuse to give up. It left me inspired, emotional, and reminded that voices, especially women’s voices, have always mattered, even when the world tried to silence them. This is a must-see! Suffs is at Connor Palace through Sunday, February 22nd, and tickets are still available. Trust me, go see it. Bring tissues. Bring friends. Leave changed. ❤️ #hosted #BroadwayCleveland #SUFFStheMusical #SUFFSTour
