Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales REVIEW

May 25, 2017 by racheljk Leave a Comment

**Want more deals?  Find me on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter!**

This weekend, the highly anticipated, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, is heading to the theaters! I got a sneak peek of this 5th installment of the Pirate series at a recent advance screening. Want to know more? Here’s a quick review with no spoilers!

There are quite a few new characters in the film but don’t worry, all of your favorites from the past are still there such as Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly. I loved how they introduced these new characters and how the tied them into the story lines of the past.

I was happy to see that this film has a new female character that is a strong, smart and independent women. Oh, and did I mention that she’s also an astronomer? This character along with the others adds a great dynamic to the storyline. They along with our favorite characters of the past Pirate movies, bring along the action that we all love!

Dead Men Tell No Tales, which takes place 20 years after the previous movie, gets off to a strong start and introduces the new male lead (Brenton Thwaites), as the son of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom). We quickly we learn that it’s his quest to save his dad by using the Trident of Poseidon. We also see that others are after this medalion, in hopes that it will help their purposes also.

This movie throws in some amazing special effects! Seriously, I was blown away by a few of them and a few parts even made me jump clear out of my seat! There was one particular part where in digital remastering, we get to see a “young Jack Sparrow” in his prime. It was fun to see everyones favorite character as a smart and ruthless pirate instead of a bumbling drunk (although that’s pretty funny too). The digital work on this particular part was simply amazing!

The film, which is a little under two hours long, ends on a beautifully touching scene. In fact, an unexpected turn of events means you may want to bring along a tissue or two. With such an elegant ending, if this is the end of the Pirate franchise, I’d say it’s a fitting finale.

A Monster Calls Review ~ Open in Theaters Nationwide!

January 6, 2017 by racheljk Leave a Comment

**Find me on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter!**

I was able to see an advance screening of A Monster Calls with a bunch of my readers last week and was absolutely blown away by the depth of this movie. This fantasy film aimed for families, is visually stunning but will pull at your heartstrings. It will be extremely heartbreaking for some while also therapeutic for others. I personally think that A Monster Call is one of the most magnificent films that you will see.

Conor, a twelve-year old who is passionate about art is struggling with schoolyard bullies and an even more complicated family life. His loving and passionate mother has cancer and while all sorts of treatments have been tried, nothing is helping. Since his father left years earlier, Conor and his mother have an unbreakable bond. Conor’s grandmother steps in to take care of his mom but while she is able to care for the physical needs, she is unable to understand Conor’s complex emotions. One night a monster (voiced by Liam Neeson) enters his life and tell him he will tell him three stories and that when he is done, Conor will tell him the fourth.

This film is not about a kid who’s mom is dying of cancer but instead about a young man who is coming to terms with the greatest tragedy of his life. In doing so he is finally able to admit the emotions that lie deep inside. This movie is one to see on the big screen. The special effects will have you leaning back in your seat at the grandeur while leaning in to hear the most intimate scenes between mother and son.

Keep in mind that while this is a family movie, the theme could be a little heavy for the younger crowd. Overall this film is deeply moving, unforgettable masterpiece. It is sure to move the most cynical person to tears, so don’t forget the Kleenex!

STORKS Movie Review ~ A FUN Family Movie Full of Laughs!

September 23, 2016 by racheljk Leave a Comment

cleveland advance screening storks

A couple weeks ago my family attended a screening of STORKS. My boys had seen the hilarious trailers several times on TV and had simply begged to go!

In this amusing new movie, Storks no longer deliver babies because of an unfortunate mix up of a baby not being delivered many years ago. The storks now ship packages for Amazon-like company. An ambitious stork Junior (Andy Samberg) is being groomed to succeed the CEO, Hunter (Kelsey Grammer). To prove that he’s got what it takes, he is asked to fire Tulip (Katie Crown), who is a human teen left behind when storks stopped delivering babies. When Tulip accidentally starts up the abandoned babymaking factory, she and Junior decide to deliver the baby to it’s rightful family.

One of my favorite parts of the movie were the scenes with the wolf pack. The pack really stole the show with their gimmicks and funny one liners. In fact, I would have liked to see them in the movie even more! Another scene stealer is the baby! With adorable big eyes and cute little coos, it almost made me want to add to our family again….ALMOST!

Want to take the family to see a great movie this weekend? Storks is it!

Synopsis:
Rated: PG
Directors: Nicholas Stoller, Doug Sweetland
Cast: Andy Samberg, Jennifer Aniston, Ty Burrell, Kelsey Grammer, Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Katie Crown, Danny Trejo
Storks deliver babies…or at least they used to. Now they deliver packages for global internet giant Cornerstore. Junior, the company’s top delivery stork, is about to be promoted when he accidentally activates the Baby Making Machine, producing an adorable and wholly unauthorized baby girl. Desperate to deliver this bundle of trouble before the boss gets wise, Junior and his friend Tulip, the only human on Stork Mountain, race to make their first-ever baby drop – in a wild and revealing journey that could make more than one family whole and restore the storks’ true mission in the world.

The Light Between Oceans ~ Movie Review

September 2, 2016 by racheljk Leave a Comment

the light between oceans cleveland advance screenings

I’ll start by saying, I love all types of “girly” movies but well made and emotionally charged? I go weak in the knees. A couple weeks ago I saw a special screening of the Light Between Oceans and hardly a day goes by that I haven’t thought of it. The Light Between Oceans is a stirring movie that will leave you entranced throughout and won’t let you go; even well after it has ended.

Michael Fassbender stars as Tom Sherbourne, a handsome but quiet veteran who recently returned from World War combat. He struggles with his war years and takes a job as a lighthouse keeper where he can live by himself to brood. During a visit to town, he meets the beautiful and outgoing Isabel (Alicia Vikander). They fall in love and get married and she moves to Lighthouse Island with him. Soon after they get married, the newlyweds try unsuccessfully to have a child. Unfortunately two pregnancies end in heartbreaking miscarriage. Both are grief stricken and it starts to effect their relationship. When a boat finds it’s way to their island with a dead man and a live baby, the couple decides to keep the child and raise it as their own. Years later, a visit to the mainland finds them face to face with the child’s birth mother, causing a rift between morality and happiness.

the light between ocean review

Based on a best selling novel by M. L. Stedman, The Light Between Oceans tells a story of love and heartbreak. It’s a story about how what seems like the right thing to do isn’t always the right thing to do. This movie is emotionally stirring and one that will make you truly love the characters. In fact, I can’t wait to read the book even though I know how it ends.

Be prepare that the miscarriage scenes are difficult to watch. There was hardly a dry eye in the theater as you watched Vikander be crushed from these losses. The scenes are so strong that I think she will be an easy contender for best actress.

The Light Between Oceans is an extremely well-made film which I highly recommend. It’s not an uplifting or inspirational movie of any kind but as is life. Grab a friend and I box of tissues (you’ve been warned) and head to the theaters this weekend to see The Light Between Oceans.

The Light Between Oceans opens Friday 9/2/16.

Pete’s Dragon Review ~ An Amazing Movie Your Family Will LOVE!

disney Pete's Dragon Review

**Want more deals?  Find me on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter!**

Cancel your plans and take the family to see Disney’s new Pete’s Dragon! My family and I attended a screening this past week and we all loved it… as in tears at the beginning and clapping at the end! OK, maybe a few tears at the end too!

In this remake of a Disney classic, new stars bring the magical story of Pete’s Dragon to the big screen. From the casting to the story line, you’ll love everything about it. The movie has enough depth for an adult to enjoy yet simple enough for my six year old to follow along with.

For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are a little more than tall tales…until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley). Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliot. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliot seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon.

Since I simply adore Bryce Dallas Howard and Robert Redford, it’s a movie I had planned to see all along. Bryce plays such a warm and kind mother figure in this film and the child actors are simply phenomenal! Fegley and Laurence are wise beyond their years and we are sure to see them grow up in the spotlight. The CGI used in the film for Elliot, the dragon, is breathtaking and I’m simply amazed how far movies have come since my childhood.

On the fence? I highly encourage everyone to get out and see Pete’s Dragon this weekend!

🦁✨ Look behind the stage of Disney's @thelionking 🦁✨ Look behind the stage of Disney's @thelionking at @playhousesquare My son and I saw the show last week, and it completely blew us away. The costumes, the music, the puppetry... it was one of the most incredible productions we've ever seen. ❤️ DON'T be late! The opening number is quite a unique experience. The next morning, we went back for a behind-the-scenes tour, and it made us appreciate the show even more! We learned that some of the masks are made with real horsehair, got to see how the amazing puppets are operated on stage, and discovered one of my favorite fun facts... Zazu's neck is made from a slinky! 🤯 Another fun surprise? Rob Sapp, who plays Ed, one of the hyenas, is from Solon, Ohio! 🙌 I always love hearing about local talent making it to Broadway, and it made the experience even more special knowing there was an Ohio connection. It's amazing how much creativity, engineering, and artistry go into bringing this beloved story to life. Whether you've seen the animated movie once or a hundred times, seeing it on stage is an unforgettable experience. 🎭 Disney's The Lion King is at Playhousesquare through August 16, and I can't recommend it enough.
