Frugal Summer Fun:  Visit Your Local  Metro Parks

Since our family is all about frugal fun we regularly visit different Lorain County Metro Parks for FREE activities. Recently our family visited the Miller Nature Preserve in Avon, Ohio.  If you haven’t visited here yet, you’ll definitely want to put it on your to-do list!  Keep in mind that even if you aren’t local there are many parks to check out in your own area.  Look below for some links to area park systems.

Miller Nature Preserve is located on Route 83 in Avon,  Ohio.  This beautiful Metro Park is nestled on 78 acres of wooded land and includes a visitor center with a café, a gift shop and a demonstration kitchen for cooking classes and a 5,000 square foot conservatory (the first in Lorain County).  There is also a seasonal FREE Butterfly House that is open through Labor Day, 10 am – 5:30 pm daily.

11

My friend and I took our kiddos last week and they loved finding all the beautiful butterflies inside.  While the house is small, the kids spent about 20 minutes searching for the butterflies that were pictured on the handy chart that is located at the entrance.  We even spotted a cocoon.

At the Miller Nature Preserve you may also want to check out the Conservatory.  This area is much larger than the butterfly house and displays various plant specimens from all over the world.  Within this exhibit you’ll find orchids, bromeliads, ferns, bonsai, desert plants, palms and cycads, and other tropical plants. This area is open 10am – 6pm daily.  While there is a small cost of have a small cost of $2 per person, children under a certain height are FREE!

While at the any Metro Parks be sure to bring along a lunch or snack and have a picnic!  All Metro Parks offer picnic tables or eating areas where eating lunch will top off your perfect afternoon.  If you’re game, you also may want to try one of the many hiking trails offered where you and your family can explore.  Make a game of it and try to spot different leaves, birds or flowers along the way.  Not only is it great exercise but it also can be a learning experience…shhh don’t tell them.

Our Fun and FRUGAL Shopping Trip to Five Below!

November 2, 2015 by racheljk Leave a Comment

five below shopping trip
This is a sponsored post for SheSpeaks/Five Below

I don’t have little girls in my house but my three boys are like me; they love to shop!  Thankfully for my wallet, we have a store nearby called Five Below.

Five Below is a gem of a store that offers toys, accessories, party supplies and so much more all for $5 or less. Yep, everything, everyday, is just $5 and below! Got to love the catchy name! When my boys have birthday money to spend or a little extra pocket money, they always ask to go to Five Below.

Five Below is a great place for preteens and teens who like to shop for the latest cool stuff that kids really want. They have clothes, items to decorate their room, sporting gear, arts and crafts party supplies, candy and toys. It’s a treasure trove just waiting to be explored. Five Below is definitely my “yes” store because while the prices are low the quality is high.

A couple of weeks ago my two oldest boys and I went on a little shopping trip to Five Below. They were super excited when we hopped into the car and I told them where we were going. As soon as we walked into the store they ran right to the Beanie Boos. My boys don’t agree on much but their love of Beanie Boos. They couldn’t decide which ones to get so they both bought two. How can you say no for only $5 each? Deal!

From here they split up. My middle son, Mason had a ball looking in the large Star Wars section which was filled with everything from bags and puzzles to characters and school supplies. I was jotting down notes so I could come back and pick things up for stocking stuffers. Before he left this area he picked up a Angry Birds Star Wars game and a few other fun treasures.

My oldest Noah, was elated to find the Skylanders section at Five Below. Even though we’ve been collecting these figurines for only 4 years he still managed to find quite a few that he didn’t have yet. In this section they also have Leap Frog Explorer cartridges, earphones, phone case, ear buds and much more which is perfect for that pre-teen, teen crowd.

The arts and craft section at Five Below is great for my little Mason. He’s the crafty one in our family and is always looking for new supplies for his newest creation. From paints to crayons, clay and markers, Five Below has you covered.

Another area we spent quite awhile in was the game area. As a family we try to shut off the electronics and do family game night from time to time. We spotted a whole back wall of games at our Five Below store. I’m definitely going to go back to pick up a few for Christmas gifts.

five below shopping with boys
While my youngest wasn’t with us, we certainly didn’t forget about him. We picked up a few goodies for him too including a Beanie Boo (of course) and some Hex Bugs. These little “critters” are one of his favorite toys.

With the holidays approaching, make sure to visit Five Below in your area. From stocking stuffers to full out presents, Five Below will keep you shopping without our busting your budget. Keep in mind also that Five Below has great items for those adults on your list too!

Declutter Your Home With Savers Donation Drop Spots

October 24, 2015 by racheljk Leave a Comment

This is a sponsored post in partnership with Savers. All thoughts and ideas remain my own.

decluttering for fall

This past week I finally started a mom’s most dreaded chore… the switching of the seasonal clothes. Since it’s almost November, I should have done this weeks ago but every season I put this task off as long as I possibly can.
While going through drawer after drawer, digging through closets and tearing up my attic, I found more and more in my home to organize. Over the summer months I had gotten lax. Items were out of place, our toy bins had grown and we were swimming in clothes.

Now that fall is here, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to declutter and make room for new things that will be coming in from two upcoming birthdays and Christmas. After about an hour and a half I had wound up with a large pile of clothes, housewares and toys. After cleaning, I just wanted it out. No selling, no waiting for garage sale, just out. Now that I have a Savers donation drop spot in my area, I knew exactly where it was all going.

savers donation drop spot cleveland
Savers Donation Drop Spots have partnered with Savers Donation Drop Spots and have recently opened 11 new donation drop spots in the greater Cleveland area. In fact there is one within a mile from my house.  What’s awesome is that Savers pays Easter Seals Northern Ohio when people donate their goods at these Savers donation drop spots; even if the items don’t make it to the sales floor.

These Savers Donation Drop Spots allow you to drive up and drop off your clothing and housewares. It’s so convenient that they accept more than just clothes at these locations which means less driving around for me.

Cleveland Area Savers Donation Drop Spots:

  • 1180  West River Road, Elyria, OH 44035
  • 33799 Center Ridge Road, North Ridgeville, OH 44039
  • 8515 Day Drive, Parma, OH 44129
  • 4332 Kent Road, Stow, OH 44224
  • 30100 Detroit Road, Westlake, OH 44145
  • 5496 Dressler Road, North Canton, OH 44720
  • 3014 Cromer Avenue, Canton, OH 44709
  • 6944 West 130th Street, Middleburg Heights, OH 44130
  • 1280 State Route 303, Streetsboro, OH 44240
  • 34400 Vine Street, Eastlake, OH 44095
  • 1183 Williams Reserve Blvd, Wadsworth, OH 44281

savers donation drop spot
While there are many things that I love about the Savers Donation Drop Spot my favorite it that there is someone at each location spot to greet and help you (during specific hours). In fact the nice gentleman at mine came right to my car as I was pulling up and asked if he could help me unload! As a busy mom of three, that was definitely helpful.

While dropping items off I was asked if I wanted a receipt for tax purposes. I’m so glad he asked as I had completely forgotten. It’s certainly a great perk to this donation drop spot.

The new Donation Drop Spots are open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The time switches to 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting the first week of November and lasting through the winter months. If you wind up stopping by without anyone there Savers Donation Drop Spots offers self serve boxes to put your things inside.

I love that Savers is inspiring local communities to donate reusable items to local nonprofits instead of throwing them in the trash. In fact, Savers has become one of the largest recyclers of used goods in the world, keeping more than 650 million pounds of reusable items from landfills each year.

In addition to the good deeds and eco-convenience Savers offers, the stores also boasts awesome deals! Savers has pioneered a thrift store experience that has defied typical expectations for secondhand shopping. You won’t find cluttered piles and broken equipment on the shelves at Savers. Instead, the stores are spacious, well-lit and easy to navigate.

New to Savers thrift store? Read the 5 Things I Love About Savers! This is a store you can spend a few hours in! Wear comfy shoes, you won’t want to leave!

If you also have a pile of items to donate I’d happily suggest finding a Savers donation drop spot near you. Not only will you have a CLEAN house but you’ll be helping your local community too!

What a gorgeous evening to enjoy our vibrant city! 🌽 After dinner, we saw @shuckedmusical musical and y’all… it was a-maize-ing! From the moment the curtain rose, I was all ears. The jokes were corny in the best way, the cast was pop-pin’, and the music? Straight up buttery smooth. Big shoutout to the writers for not husking around with the humor—this show shucks in all the right ways. I laughed, I teared up (maybe from the laughter), and I left the theater feeling like one happy kernel. Whether you're a theater buff or just stalk-ing a good time, go see Shucked. My sister and I had the BEST time seeing @peterpanthemusical at @playhousesquare and it was pure magic from start to finish! The sets were stunning, the flying scenes were jaw-dropping, and the cast brought all the nostalgia and wonder to life in the most heartwarming way. 💫 From the moment Peter soared onto the stage, we were hooked (pun intended 😂). Captain Hook was delightfully dramatic, the Lost Boys were hilarious, and Tinker Bell? Totally stole the show. It’s the perfect mix of adventure, laughs, and just enough fairy dust to make you believe in magic again. 🏴‍☠️✨ 🎭 If you’re in Cleveland, don’t miss it — Peter Pan is only in town through April 13th at Playhouse Square! We spent HOURS there and STILL didn’t see everything – definitely need to go back! 🦖✨ We took a stroll through @centralparknyc on a chilly but sunny day and climbed to the top of the Belvedere Castle. 🏰 Then, we went to an incredible concert at @townhallnyc where the orchestra played music from one of my son’s favorite video games. 🎶 Bonus: He got to meet the Grammy award winning artist @crosenmusic who arranged the music. After the concert we grabbed dinner at a local Irish pub @thelongroomnyc and listened to live music. We even met some new friends from Brazil! We stayed out ‘til the wee hours chatting and having way too much fun!.
