Rampage Movie Review
My family and I attended an advance screening of the upcoming blockbuster, RAMPAGE this week. My boys have been begging to see this since they first saw a preview. They knew it would have a whole lot of action and that it featured one of their favorite stars, Dawyne Johnson. My oldest and husband loved that it is based on the retro videogame of the same name.
In a nutshell, RAMPAGE is about big mutant animals… well on a rampage! It has an easy to follow storyline and is non-stop action from beginning to end! This movie isn’t for those looking for fine cinema but for those of you who just want big monster fun, this is it!
At the beginning of the movie, we are introducted to primatologist (and very good looking ;)) Davis Okoye (Dwane Johnson). He’s been working with albino Silverback gorilla, George, ever since he rescued the young orphan from poachers. When a genetic experiment goes awry and the space station debris touches down in George’s enclosure, things get wild. This gentle giant become an raging creature of enormous size. To make matters worse, he’s not the only altered animal. Cue the super-sized wolf and alligator! These creatures won’t let anything stop them as tear across the country, racing to Chicago. Okoye teams up with geneticist Kate Caldwell (Naomie Harris) to secure an antidote to not only try to save his friend but everyone in the path of these terrifying creatures.
The word of the day here is ACTION. It’s seriously action packed from beginning to end. The CGI hijinks in this movie are out of this world and some of the best I’ve ever seen. In fact, there are even some “wow, I can’t believe they are going to …” moments! AMAZING!
This movie is rated PG-13 for sequences of violence, action and destruction, brief language, and crude gestures. As for the violence and destruction, I knew there was going to be quite a bit of of it. I mean the movie is called RAMPAGE, after all. As for most movies, it’s was the language that I’m most worried about for my kiddos. This movie does have some language in it but I’d say it’s very mild for this type of movie. In fact, I’m happy that it seemed like they held back a bit, to keep it a PG-13 rating. The crude jestures are made by the gorilla all in good fun. In fact, the audience was laughing the two times he did it. As for the last one in the movie, my kids didn’t even know what it meant and it went over their heads. There are a few jumpy parts but I think they made me jump more than my kids, since I’m never ready for something to jump out at me.
All in all, I felt safe being my boys to this movie even with their ages being 7, 10 and 12. No one was scared or tried to creep into my bed in the middle of the night. I’d say that is a win.
