A Winter Getaway at Castaway Bay + GIVEAWAY

Winter is here with a vengence! If the cold weather is making you dream of a tropical family getaway, Castaway Bay is sure to take away your winter blues! A trip to Castaway Bay in Sandusky, Ohio makes an awesome weekend road trip. Best of all, the temperature is always 82 degrees inside no matter how low it drops outdoors.

A couple weeks ago, my family visited Castaway Bay for a winter getaway.
The weekend we went was COLD and windy! In fact, that was the weekend we got 8 inches of snow in northeast Ohio. The weather didn’t stop us, we couldn’t wait to start our warm tropical vacation together.

Castaway Bay is a four-season water park and resort just outside of Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio. It is an official property of Cedar Point which gives families perks of staying at a water park and the benefits of staying close to the park (when open during the summer months). Castaway Bay is open mostly on weekends during the winter months and then daily starting in March. Looking for particular dates? Here’s the calendar.

CASTAWAY BAY WATERPARK


Castaway Bay Waterpark is filled with all sorts of water activities including tube slides, a wave pool, an extreme raft slide, kiddie pool, and a huge interactive play structure with a giant bucket that empties out every few minutes! Don’t worry about bringing towels to the park, there’s plenty of grab-and-go towels for guests.

We spent a lot of time in the wave pool, which makes calm waves suitable for the little ones at the front but offers more intense ones in the back for older kids. When the waves stop, the pool becomes a zero-depth entry pool that’s great for swimming.

Another place we hung out a lot was in the indoor/outdoor grotto spa. It’s warm without being too warm and the jets feel amazing. What more can you ask for on a winter getaway?

CASTAWAY BAY ROOMS

Castaway Bay features many different types of rooms which are perfect for families of any size. From standard rooms to large suites, Castaway Bay offers comfortable accomodations to make a perfect overnight stay.

We stayed in the spacious Tarpon Suite which offers a comfy king size bed and two sets of bunk beds in a semi-private sleeping area. My boys loved that they had their own special space and TV. Our room offered a small refrigerator and microwave and a large walk in closet. This made it easy to store our bags, shoes and coats without cluttering our room.

Many Castaway Bay rooms and suites feature a private deck or balcony and some have access to adjoining rooms – perfect for extended families or large groups. With rooms and suites that fit 4 – 6 people with both balconies and non-balconies, it’s sure to fit just about any budget.

CASTAWAY BAY ACTIVITIES

When you check in, be sure to ask for an activity sheet. This paper lists all the fun activities that are going on that day. From family movies, crafts, bedtime stories and so much more, Castaway Bay is so much more than just a waterpark.  The Peanut character meet and greets are a family favorite! In fact, on the two days we were there we were able to meet Charlie Brown, Snoopy and a few other characters. This makes for great photo opportunities!

While staying at Castaway Bay, don’t miss Club Castaway! This large area located on the third floor and features a large screen TV, dance floor and tables for crafts. Club Castaway offers up FUN for all ages. There are always free coloring pages and for a small fee, other activities such as coloring t-shirts and bags.

Your kiddos will definitely want to check out Crabbie’s Quarterdeck Arcade. This arcade boasts all the best video games such as skee-ball, basketball, claw machines.  They offer ticket and non-ticket redemption games as well.

To make it super easy for families, tickets earned are directly loaded onto the arcade cards and they are reloadable. Best of all, many games award tickets that can be redeemed for awesome prizes. You can pay for single games but we found the package deals let your kids play for hours for one low price.

Keep in mind that this hotel offers a valet service for $30 a day. In reading the comments, I also found that there is a garage next door that also offers parking for a bit less.

Cedar Point Express Hotel ~ A Short Drive to a SMART Stay!

Cedar Point’s Express Hotel

Wondering where to stay when visiting Cedar Point? Check out Cedar Point’s Express Hotel! Located just outside the gates of  Cedar Point, this recently updated (2017) hotel is the perfect place for families. With amenities such as complimentary parking and wi-fi, an enchanting courtyard, an outdoor pool and sprayground this hotel has something for everyone.

As soon as you walk in, you’ll notice the gorgeous remodeled lobby with fresh colors, flooring and front desk area. I loved the modern colors and decor and how you could see through to the back doors and into the courtyard. This area is clean and bright. To the left of the main entrance is an expanded gift shop filled with items such as Cedar Point shirts, shorts and souveniers. The gift shop offers coffee and donuts for purchase at breakfast, along with tons of snacks and microwave meals for late night munchies.

The hotel now contains 419 rooms, including 69 brand new rooms that now enclose the center courtyard. I loved that most of the rooms are connecting which makes it easier to travel for families or large groups. Each of the rooms feature a coffee maker, fridge, microwave, and premium bedding. The new colors make the rooms pop. I loved the attention to detail and the extra plugs in the room. This is a must for a family who travels with technology. Even the bathrooms were updated with brand new open-view vanities, paint, and flooring.

Want to take relax before or after heading to the park? The Cedar Point Express Hotel courtyard and pool is the place to be during the summer months! This area has to be my favorite feature. This large area features a brand new splash pad, as well as a heated swimming pool (open through Labor Day). If swimming isn’t your thing, the new courtyard now offers plenty of shaded space with tables and chairs for you to relax at after an busy day at the park. We were able to order a pizza from a nearby place and eat our dinner at a comfy table. My boys loved that we didn’t have to leave the pool area.

One of the best reasons to stay at one of Cedar Point’s hotels or resort properties to to gain access to some pretty awesome benefits such as early to the parks and discounted tickets. On top of this, after a day at the park you won’t have to travel far as the Cedar Point Express Hotel has some of the closest rooms to where the action happens.
