Gervasi Vineyard, Canton, Ohio – A Gorgeous Place to Stay and Delicious Place to Eat!

June 21, 2016 by racheljk 10 Comments

Gervasi Vineyard review 2

**Find me on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter!**

Original post: July 2014

A couple of weeks ago, my husband and I went away for the night without the kids.  While I love spending time with my boys, I find that it is really important to get away with my husband to relax, unwind, and renew.  As a mama of three young and rambunctious boys, it’s hard to plan time away, but when we do, we always find it worth it.

When researching our overnight trip, we found a gem called Gervasi Vineyard in Canton, Ohio.  While the pictures were gorgeous online, I was not prepared for what we saw when we arrived.  As we approached the tree-lined entrance, I immediately knew that we in for a treat!

Gervasi Vineyard review1

The Grounds:

Situated in beautiful Canton, Ohio, Gervasi boasts nearly six acres of vineyards carefully sited on their historic fifty-five-acre farm property. You will pass the North Vineyard on your left as you come into the property, which becomes a stunning backdrop for weddings and events, and the site of their popular seasonal vineyard dinners. The South Vineyard is located towards the back of the property just past the orchard and along the roadway to Gervasi Village and the Crush House Restaurant.

In addition to the vineyards, Gervasi offers restaurants, overnight accommodations in six different villas, and access to Stark Parks walking/bicycling trails.  They offer many events throughout the year such as art shows, live music, and dance classes.  Gervasi even hosts a free public winery tour each Saturday.

We checked in at the Villa Grande, which upholds its name in beauty and grandeur. This facility houses conference rooms, a ballroom, and executive board rooms. The Cucina, a Culinary and Wine Education Center which is also located here, offers culinary or wine experiences that can be incorporated into your special event, if desired.

As you walk the grounds at Gervasi Vineyard, you truly feel as though you are far from Ohio.  I was amazed by the well cared for lawns, gorgeous floral arrangements and detailed landscaping. When you come to Gervasi you can finally relax.

The Villas:

Once we had our key to our villa, we couldn’t wait to get inside! Gervasi Vineyard offers six separate villas which are each comprised of four individual suites (24 suites). Guests have the option of reserving an individual suite or an entire villa (how fun to bring a group of friends).

As we walked into our luxurious Tuscan styled villa, we were simply amazed by our room. The spacious lobby of our villa featured a living room, patio, fireplace, microwave, refrigerator, and much more. Before heading to our suite, we grabbed a few complimentary drinks in the refrigerator.

Gervasi Vineyard 4

When we turned the key to our room, I was in awe by the size and decor of our suite.  This is hands down, the most beautiful room I’ve ever stayed at; I felt like a princess. Each suite includes a cozy fireplace and a spacious bathroom with a walk-in shower and even heated towel bars. Additional amenities in each suite include TV monitor (even in the bathroom), luxury linens, flat-screen television and refrigerator.  There are even a robe and slippers in the closet.

Gervasi Vineyard 5

The king-sized bed in our room was so comfortable and had a ton of pillows to make us feel right at home. Forget a toiletry item?  Gervasi Vineyard has you covered and will offer a free toiletry item for any that you missed.  Want to enhance your stay? Gervasi offers floral arrangements, chocolate, wine, and baskets that can all be brought to your room.

Each morning, every suite is delivered a complimentary Italian-style continental breakfast featuring house-made pastries, granola and fresh fruit. Your breakfast is even delivered in a rustic wine box. It was so nice to wake up without having to worry about leaving the room for breakfast! Oh, and the breakfast was simply scrumptious!

The Restaurants:

Gervasi offers three different restaurants on the property. The Piazza is their outdoor patio offering seasonal al fresco dining with beautiful lakeside views.  The Crush House®, their newest restaurant and wine bar, offers a casual menu with bold decor. The Bistro restaurant, where reservations are encouraged for lunch and dinner, includes an extensive rustic Italian menu served in small and large plate portions for sharing.  Both The Crush House and The Piazza offer events throughout the year, such as live music to make your evening even more special.

Gervasi Vinyard the Piazza

The evening that we went the weather was perfect, so we chose to eat at the Piazza for both meals.  The Piazza requires no reservations and is located outside on the patio. They offer casual dining, where you order from the front counter and your food is delivered to your table.

While waiting for our meal, we watched others play Bocce ball and corn hole right out on the lawn and took in the gorgeous views of the lake. Throughout the summer and fall, this restaurant also offers live music Thursday – Sunday evenings which would only add to its charm.

While the prices may vary in each restaurant, The Piazza pricing was far less than I was expecting. On top of that, our food was delicious and our portions were ample. Next time we visit we may venture to the other restaurants, but I can’t imagine being any more pleased.

My husband and I had such a wonderful time at Gervasi Vineyard that we are planning on making it a yearly getaway. From wonderful accommodations, beautiful grounds, and delicious food, Gervasi Vineyard is the perfect place for a romantic dinner or weekend getaway.

Gervasi Vineyard

Disclosure:  All opinions are my own.  This is not a paid post. My overnight accommodations were complimentary for the purpose of review.  All food and beverages from the restaurant were purchased.

5 Things You’ll Love about Carowinds!

June 7, 2016 by racheljk Leave a Comment

Things to do at Carowinds 2

**Want more deals?  Find me on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter!**

One of the best perks of a Cedar Point Platinum passes, is being able to visit any other Cedar Fair amusement. Lucky for us who live in northeast Ohio, there are total of eight Cedar Fair parks all within an eight hour drive.  These include, Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio, Wild Water Kingdom in Aurora, Ohio, Kings Island in Mason, Ohio, Dorney Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Kings Dominion in Doswell, Virginia, Michigan’s Adventure in Muskegon, Michigan and Carowinds on the border of both North and South Carolina. In fact, if you have a passport, Canada’s Wonderland in Toronto, Canada is just under a 5 hour drive. How neat is that?

what to do at carowinds

On our way back from Florida, my family stopped at Carowinds. In fact, it’s the perfect half way point between Orlando and Cleveland.  This is our second visit to Carowinds and we had a great time. So what is there to do at Carowinds? Here are my family’s top five things that we LOVE about Carowinds.

Don’t have season passes? Here are Carowinds ticket prices:

  • One day online ticket – only $42.99
  • Two day online ticket – only $62.99
  • After 4pm ticket – only $29.99

things to do at carowinds

#1 The Park is in TWO Different States:
One fun thing that I love about Carowinds is that it’s actually in two different states. At the entrance of the park you’ll see a white pathway which shows the division between North Carolina and South Carolina. Yes, you can actually stand to two different states at the same time. It’s the perfect opportunity to snap a picture!

#2 The Family Friendly Rides:
Carowinds offers up a lot of family friendly rides which are great for even your smallest kiddos. I really like that there are quite a few that aren’t at our home park of Cedar Point which makes it a real treat. I noticed that many of the kiddie rides seem a little larger than other parks that we’ve been too which is perfect for a mama with a little more meat on her bones. I was able to fit comfortably into every kiddie ride that I attempted.

My whole family loves Boo Blasters on Boo Hill, where you ride inside interactive Boo Blaster cars and challenge your friends to see who can capture the most ghosts! Another great one is the Flying Ace Balloon Race. This is not your typical kiddie ride but instead goes a bit higher than others I have rode. It’s fun enough for adults without  being too scary for the kiddies.

carowinds review
Be sure to also check out Planet Snoopy where they offer up a ton of rides for your kiddos. Best of all, parents can ride many too. Be sure to ride Woodstock’s Whirlybirds where pilots of all ages get a great panoramic view of Planet Snoopy from helicopter cars traveling on an elevated monorail. The Planet Snoopy area also offers up boat ride, a kiddy train and three kid-size roller coasters. My three little guys really liked the ride Peanuts Pirates! These mini pirate ships rotate a full 180 degrees as they quickly race  up and down along ocean waves. It had us all in fits of giggles.

New for the 2016 season, Carowinds introduced the world’s first intra-active 3-D attraction, Plants vs. Zombies™ Garden Warfare 3Z Arena. After entering a state-of-the-art arena and picking a team – plants or zombies – guests are immersed within the Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2 universe in an epic battle to find the golden gnome. Packed with astonishing effects and zany action, players compete for high scores and bragging rights.

This new attraction is exclusive to Carowind and allows players to interact with the opposing team’s screen. Th arena is decked out with 3-D technology, massive screens, surround sound and motion-based seats.  This is a ride not to miss!

carowinds fury 325

#3 The Amazing Coasters
If you head to Carowinds, riding the roller coasters is a MUST! In the 2015 season, Carowinds debuted Fury 325! Riders go to the peak height of 325 feet following a dramatic 81-degree drop. There is also a massive 190-foot tall barrel turn and a high-speed S-curve reaching speeds of up to 95 mph. This is one AWESOME coaster that you’ll want to ride over and over again.

Another one not to miss is Intimidator. You’ll head up a 232-foot hill and plunge at a 74-degree angle. Racing in speeds up to 80 mph, riders catch some major airtime on the second hill, which is a whopping 178-feet. The staggered cars on this ride make you feel like you are riding all alone. If your a daredevil try an outside cart and ride at night…simply amazing.

Carowinds offers up many other coasters including Nighthawk a flying coaster that features eight inversions, most while flying face down and Afterburn which is a inverted floorless coaster. I really like that there are coasters here that are not offered at it’s sister park near us which allows you to have a whole new experience.

carowinds review ricochet

My littlest guy was over the moon that he was JUST tall enough to ride the “big coaster” at Carowinds, called Ricochet. This “Wild Mouse” coaster features a small four-seater car which twists, turns and drops it’s riders along a 1200 sq. ft track. It’s a favorite among my youngest two and it’s easy to see why.

carowinds carolina harbor waterpark

#4  The Expanded Waterpark

Locals to Carowinds are in for a real treat when the Carolina Harbor Waterpark opens on May 11th. This amazing renovations includes Surf Club Harbor, a27,000-foot wave pool, Seaside Splashworks, a water fortress with over 80 play elements and a 423-gallon tipping bucket and Blackbeard’s Revenge, a six-story tall water slide complex that features six exhilarating slides. On top of this they are also creating a couple of new spaces for those with little ones including areas with spray jets, interactive water play and more.

carowinds food review

#5 The Delicious Food

Step inside Carowinds and you’ll smell it right away! Carowinds sets the bar high when it comes to amusement park food. In fact, with 45 new menu items, you may just want to eat all day and catch the rides another time! Executive Chef, Kris Siuta and his culinary team have created some delicious dishes, including authentic Carolina cuisine like smoked BBQ and Lowcountry seafood.

carowinds food review

Our favorite place to eat at Carowinds is Harmony Hall. This large building hosts a cafeteria style setting with many options to choose from including BBQ, Italian, burgers and my personal favorite a fresh salad area.  I’ve ordered several salads and all were great. I would have never expected such an flavorful salad at an amusement park. In fact, I had a hard time keeping my husband’s fork out of my salad.

If you haven’t visited Carowinds, I’d strongly recommend you do! Carowinds is a great place to spend a day or even a few with your family and friends!

Castaway Bay ~ An Indoor Waterpark For the Whole Family!

April 8, 2016 by racheljk 91 Comments

Castaway Bay Resort review and giveaway

**Want more deals?  Find me on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter!**

A couple weeks ago my family and I stayed overnight at Castaway Bay in Sandusky, Ohio. Being Ohio residents, we couldn’t wait to get out of the unpredictable, cold weather and into the balmy 82 degree indoor waterpark.

As soon as we pulled into the parking lot, my boys squealed with delight! They knew they were in for a great time of splashing, waterslides, swimming and maybe even a few arcade games. When we checked into our room, my boys ran to the sliding glass door and stood on our private screened in balcony. My youngest pointed at the road ahead and then turned and said, “Mom, that’s the Cedar Point road”.  Being Cedar Point season pass holder’s, it was great to know that the world’s best amusement park was just right down the road.

castaway bay reviewRooms:

Castaway Bay features 237 hotel rooms and suites including family-oriented units.  There are many different types of rooms which are perfect for families of any size. From standard rooms to large suites, Castaway Bay offers comfortable accomodations to make a perfect overnight stay.

As a family of five, we stayed in the Tarpon Suite. This suite offers a comfy king size bed and two sets of bunk beds in a semi-private sleeping area. My boys loved that they had their own special space and TV. Our room offered a small refrigerator and microwave. This was great to keep our beverages cold and made our late night snack of popcorn convenient to make.  I especially liked that our room offered a large walk in closet. This made it easy to store our bags, shoes and coats without cluttering our room. I’m not sure if this is offered in every Tarpon Suite but according to the layout on their website, it looks like it.castaway bay review
Castaway Bay rooms and suites feature a private deck or balcony (in most), flat screen television, free wireless internet, microwave, mini-refrigerator and coffee maker. Also, many rooms have access to adjoining rooms – perfect for extended families or large groups.  With rooms and suites that fit 4 – 6 people with both balconies and non-balconies, it’s sure to fit just about any budget.

castaway bay review meet and greetActivities:

When you check in, be sure to ask for an activity sheet. This paper lists all the fun activities that are going on that day. From family movies, crafts, bedtime stories and so much more, Castaway Bay is so much more than just a waterpark.  The Peanut character meet and greets are a family favorite! In fact, on the two days we were there we were able to meet Linus, Snoopy and a few other characters. This makes for great photo opportunities!

castaway bay reviews 2016

While staying at Castaway Bay, don’t miss Club Castaway! This large area located on the third floor and features a large screen TV, dance floor and tables for crafts. Club Castaway  offers up FUN for all ages. While we were there my boys designed t-shirts and created Easter crafts. While some things have a small fee, many activities are free. You got to love that!

castaway bay reviews activities
On top of all the other activities offered that weekend, they also had a hot cocoa meetup in the lobby. We were offered free cookies and hot chocolate. While it was a little busy, the employees were on top of it and it was extremely organized. It was fun to snuggle by the fireplace with our little ones and talk about our day before bed.

The Waterpark:

Castaway Bay offers up a 38,000-square-foot, tropical theme indoor waterpark resort. This waterpark is loaded with water activities for all ages. Our first stop was the Castaway Bay wave pool where we frolicked in the warm waters and jumped in the waves.  This was an area the whole family enjoyed from my youngest to the oldest.  There are chairs surrounding this zero entry area so even if you don’t get in, you can sit and dip your toes in.

castaway bay review hot tub

Another favorite was the indoor/outdoor hot tub.  The weekend we visited it was freezing outside, so it was a lot of fun to enjoy a soak while snow was falling all around.  It was so relaxing to let the jets massage my aching muscles and bask in the warm waters. This area was open to our whole family but children under a certain height do need accompanied by and adult.

Castaway Bay offers slides for both the younger ones and those young at heart.  In fact one called Rendezvous Run, is a rousing 35-foot-high, 520-foot-long water roller coaster that propels you uphill using water jets. Of course, this Cedar Point waterpark is going to have a COASTER WATERSLIDE!

castaway bay review 2016

If you have little ones, you won’t want to miss the Lookout Lagoon Family Funhouse which features pint sized slides, bridges, water guns and a 1000 gallon tipping bucket. They also offer Toddler Tide Pool with smaller slides and a zero entry pool and Creature Cove which offers basketball hoops and numerous flotation devices.  Our family spent a lot of time in this area just swimming about.

Restaurants:

If you get hungry, you don’t have to go far as Castaway Bay offers up several eating options.  Inside the waterpark you can eat at Big Daddy’s Snack Shack where they offer up menu items including pizza, wings and breadsticks, hot dogs, warm pretzels, soft serve ice cream and more.  If you are a bit hungier, hop into Mango Mike’s right outside the main lobby. This buffet style restaurant offers both breakfast and dinner options at separate times.  My family has eaten at both of these restaurants in the past and really liked both.

Looking for a snack? Ebb & Eddy’s is your place! Menu items include quick service breakfast items, fresh bakery selections, deli wraps, salads, ice cream, assorted cold beverages, Starbucks coffee and other assorted hot beverages.  Here’s a little tip. After 6:00pm you can snag a donut for just a dollar each. Grab a few and keep them for breakfast the next morning.

castaway bay review quaker steak
On This trip my family and I ate at Quaker Steak & Lube. Since this restaurant is located on the property of Castaway Bay and connected to the building, you won’t have to leave at all.  This award winning restaurant offers up ribs & burgers and delicious wings in 25 signature sauces. While my kiddies ordered their typical kids meals, I scored a tastly yet healthy dish of grilled chicken and steamed broccoli. It was delicious!

Our 2013 Family Trip to Put-in-Bay – Part 1

March 14, 2016 by racheljk 63 Comments

 family day trip to put-in-bay

**Spring is here! Check out my families trip to Put-in-Bay from summer of 2013.

Our Family Day Trip to Put-in-Bay – Part One

**Read Put-in-Bay – Part Two**

It’s really hard to imagine that I’ve lived in Northeast Ohio my whole life, yet until recently had never visited the gorgeous Lake Erie Islands.  Crazy, huh?   With the islands not being very far from my home in Lorain County, I jumped at the chance to visit South Bass Island and the village of Put-in-Bay.  Since my hard-working husband was at work, I brought along my mom and three boys.

Put-in-Bay Ohio is a quaint little town dotted with historic homes, mouth-watering restaurants, unique gift shops and local pubs.  It’s also home to the nation’s third tallest monument.  While the island can be a bit more boisterous on the weekends, it’s a perfect family destination during the week.

Before ourday trip to Put-in-Bay, we stopped at the Lake Erie Shores and Islands Visitor’s Center in Sandusky, Ohio (they also have a second location in Port Clinton).  If you are looking for any information regarding the Shores and Islands area, this is the place.

Once we stepped inside, I was amazed by the amount of brochures, maps, and discount coupons readily available.   While you’re there you also want to take some time looking at their interactive displays and video.  As a mom of three little ones, I was impressed that they even had a few things to keep my boys occupied while I looked around including a pint-sized table where they could color and a life-sized boat.

Put-in-Bay
Before we left we asked for directions to the pier and while I was expecting verbal instructions that I was sure to mix up, the helpful employee pulled out a map and highlighted the exact streets to take.  This made our quick trip to the dock even easier.

Our 2013 Family Day Trip to Put-in-Bay – Part 2

put-in-bay

**Spring is here! Check out my family’s trip to Put-in-Bay in the summer of 2013.

Our Day Trip to Put-in-Bay – Part Two

If you missed my first post on our Family Day Trip to Put-in-Bay you’ll definitely want to read that first!

Once we stepped foot on Put-in-Bay, I knew we were in for an amazing day!  The weather was perfect, the cloudless sky was the brightest shade of blue, and the kids were bubbling with excitement.  My oldest exclaimed, “Mom, is this a real island?”.

When we got off the Jet Express, we quickly found the shuttle that took us a short drive to the Train Depot.  This was included in our Island Fun Pack, and since it was our first visit to the island, I instantly relaxed knowing that everything was taken care of. We got to the Train Depot, hopped on the train, and were excited to see what our first adventure would bring.

put-in-bay

The Island Fun Pack includes many of the islands highlights and is perfect for those who are considering a day trip to Put-in-Bay!  While the Tour Train is a one-hour narrated tour the island, you have stop off privileges at many popular spots.  With the tram stopping by each scheduled stop every 30 minutes, it’s easy to catch the train when you are ready to go to your next destination. The Island Fun Pack includes vouchers to:

  • Miller Boat Line or Jet Express
  • Perry’s Cave
  • War of 18 Holes Miniature Golf
  • The Butterfly House at Put-in-Bay
  • Antique Car Museum
  • Heineman Winery & Crystal Cave

Once we were on our way, I was able to sit back and really take in the island. As we rode through the downtown area we were amazed by the amount of options that this little town can offer. We passed by many quaint shops that were brimming with customers, as well as many restaurants with a variety of food to choose from.  My boys were especially excited to see both a playground and a carousel located in the center of town!

Then we grabbed a quick dinner at Sushi En before heading into the theater. And wow... this show is BIG Broadway. Think stunning costumes, gorgeous sets, incredible choreography, and all the glitz and glamour you'd expect from Gatsby. The production is visually spectacular and brings the lavish world of Jay Gatsby to life in a way that feels larger than life.
