Disclosure: I was invited to media night. All opinions are my own.

Les Misérables now playing at Playhouse Square’s Connor Palace

My oldest son has always been quiet and pensive but a few years ago he discovered theater and he literally becomes a different person on stage. It’s been amazing to see him perform in several musicals and while he still is very quiet off-stage, his love for theater continues to grow. A few weeks ago he started to see advertisements for Les Misérables tour in Cleveland and was intrigued. He wasn’t familiar with the story but as soon as we started listening to the soundtrack, he was hooked.

“Les Misérables” — the epic musical based on Victor Hugo’s novel about the Paris Uprising of 1823 — has been by more than 130 million people in 44 countries and in 22 languages around the globe. It has broken box office records everywhere and in it’s 32nd year is still the world’s most popular musical.

“Les Misérables” is a thrilling and unforgettable musical that will stir your soul. Whether this is your first time to hear the amazing songs such as “One Day More” and “One My Own” or you’ve been belting them out in the shower for years, you can rest assured this musical is inspiring and uplifting. In fact, I found it hard not to stand and clap after quite a few numbers.

“Les Mis” begins in 1815 with Frenchman Jean Valjean being released from prison, where he has spent the past 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread. Wanting to leave his old life behind, he changes his name, becomes a wealthy business owner and mayor. He takes compassion on fired employee, Fantine, who died after becoming a prostitute out of desperation and raises her young daughter, Cosette.

Years later, the country is in a state of revolution and the fates of Valjean and his daughter, become intertwined with the young students leading the rebellion. All the while, Valjean is hunted by the obsessive Inspector Javert who just can’t seem to let him be.

This production boasts Nick Cartell as Valjean and Josh Davis at Javert. Their songs such as “Bring Him Home” and “Stars” are breathtaking and are sure to keep audiences coming back time and time again. Their voices blend together beautifully as well as stand strong on their own

Rounding out the cast and giving some passionate performances is Jillian Butler, as Cosette; Joshua Grosso, as Cosette’s love, Marius; Paige Smallwood, as Eponine; and Mary Kate Moore, as Fantine. When Mary sang her rendition of “The Dream I Dream” it gave me goosebumps.

The company of LES MISÉRABLES performs “Master of the House” with J Anthony Crane as ‘Thénardier’ and Allison Guinn as ‘Madame Thénardier.’ Photo by Matthew Murphy.

The comedic antics from inn keepers, J Anthony Crane, as Thenardier, and Allison Guinn, as Madame Thenardier, had the audience in hysterics. This conniving couple really brings a strong comedic element to the show. While some of their gestures were a little adult, most went over my son’s head. In fact, he deemed their song, “Master Of The House” his favorite.

Besides the music, the show is dominated by remarkable lighting and backdrops that were inspired by the paintings of the author of the book, Victor Hugo. This musical also added video imagery to create a dramatic experience as Valjean carries an injured Marius through the Paris sewers. In another intense scene involving Javert, multiple parts of a bridge are whisked away in just seconds and you could hear the gasps from the crowd.

Whether this is the first time you are going to see “Les Misérables” or you’ve seen it time and time again, you won’t be disappointed. It will stir something inside of you that with be with you long after you leave the theater.

‘Les Misérables’ continues through Nov. 18 at Playhouse Square’s Connor Palace, 1511 Euclid Ave., Cleveland. Tickets range in price from $39 to $149. For tickets call 216-241-6000 or visit playhousesquare.org.

I’ve never read this book or have seen the musical but by reading what it’s about, it really intrigued me! I have been to the playhouse square once before and it was a beautiful concert. This show seems like it would entice the audience in every aspect of how well though out the movements and soundtracks would be. I’m glad you had fun!

Champagne dreams, flapper dresses, and a night for Champagne dreams, flapper dresses, and a night for Broadway in Cleveland? Count me in! ✨🥂 Last night we stepped back into the Roaring Twenties for media night at @bwaygatsby at @playhousesquare! My sister and I snagged our 1920s-inspired outfits and made a whole evening of it. We started with happy hour at @encorepsq, the stylish bar right across the street from Playhouse Square, which had the perfect swanky Gatsby vibes. I love their happy hours specials too! Then we grabbed a quick dinner at Sushi En before heading into the theater. And wow... this show is BIG Broadway. Think stunning costumes, gorgeous sets, incredible choreography, and all the glitz and glamour you'd expect from Gatsby. The production is visually spectacular and brings the lavish world of Jay Gatsby to life in a way that feels larger than life. If you love classic stories, dazzling performances, and a little Jazz Age sparkle, add this one to your summer theater list. ✨🎭 The Great Gatsby is playing at Playhouse Square through June 28 as part of the KeyBank Broadway Series. Tickets are currently still available and can be purchased by calling 216-241-6000 or online at playhousesquare.org. Who else loves a themed night out? 🍾 #thegreatgatsby #BroadwayCleveland #BWYCLE #BwayGatsbyTour
🎭 Did you know you can take a FREE behind-the-scen 🎭 Did you know you can take a FREE behind-the-scenes tour of @playhousesquare? 🎭 Everyone needs to add this to their Cleveland bucket list! Free public tours of Playhouse Square are offered on the third Saturday of every month, and they're packed with fascinating history, hidden details, and stories you probably never knew. You'll learn how this incredible theater district went from nearly being demolished in the 1970s to becoming the largest theater restoration project in the world. Did you know that Playhouse Square is the second-largest performing arts district in the United States, behind only Broadway in New York City, with 12 performance venues throughout the district? One of my favorite parts was getting to see everything up close and in detail without the usual crowds. From the stunning architecture to the behind-the-scenes stories, there were so many things I've walked past for years without realizing their significance. If you've ever attended a show, or even if you haven't, I highly recommend taking this tour. It's a whole new way to experience one of Cleveland's most iconic treasures. ❤️ Have you ever taken a Playhouse Square tour? Be sure to tell a friend! 🎟️👇 #PlayhouseSquare #ClevelandOhio #thisiscleveland #CLE #clevelandevents

Did you know you can save money when you book them together? Check out the E's Golf Cart & Miller Ferry Put-in-Bay Discount Package when you reserve at least one day in advance! One of the reasons we love Miller Ferry is that it's the most affordable way to get to the island, and it's the only ferry that lets you bring your car. Plus, E's Golf Carts is conveniently located just around the corner from the Miller Ferry drop-off. The weather was absolutely gorgeous! We spent the day shopping, cruising around the island by golf cart, enjoying lunch at The Keys, relaxing at the little beach on the tip of the island, and taking a short hike to soak in the views. Put-in-Bay is such a fun destination for both groups and families. If you're bringing kids, be sure to check out the highly rated caves on the islands, play a round of putt-putt, visit the Lake Erie Islands Nature & Wildlife Center, and stop by the Butterfly House for a colorful, family-friendly experience. (I usually just avoid the downtown area on weekend evenings if I'm visiting with kids.) Who's ready for an island day trip? #putinbay #MillerFerry #GirlsTrip #OhioAdventures #LakeErieIslands

We explored the museum, checked out life-sized dinosaurs, enjoyed hands-on activities, crafts, face painting, and interactive exhibits throughout the day. They even gave away COUPONS!! Of course, one of the highlights was sampling Realgood Foods' dino chicken nuggets! I personally eat Realgood chicken - there is always a bag in my freezer. It is high protein and low carb! I eat a lot of chicken and I'm picky with my brands, but I enjoy this treat when I need something fast and tasty! It was such a fun day filled with dinosaurs, learning, and making memories together. 🦖❤️
